SPUD’s mantra is: “Be part of the solution”

I’ve been ordering Spud for years and have always been happy with their selection and service. Spud is well ahead of its time, and began offering grocery delivery to Chilliwack before Superstore or Walmart.

Normally I wouldn’t trust just any grocery delivery company to leave perishable food on my front porch all day long, but I know how reliable and worry-free Spud is.

They are extremely transparent about exactly where their food comes from, profiling some of the local farmers on their website and even telling you how far each product travelled to get to their warehouse.

Choosing Spud.ca is a smart choice if you want to save time on shopping, eat healthy with high-quality and organic groceries, feel good supporting sustainable practices, and get some cash back with their points system.

It makes me feel good to not only feed my family with healthy meals, but to support local businesses and overall it’s just a great experience every time.

Chilliwack gets free organic grocery delivery on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Other days may require you to pick up from their Vancouver warehouse, but this is also free.

Some delivery days will only be able to offer a “select range” of items, but this still includes their top 3000 products. Their website has a calendar that indicates well in advance which days these will be.

They allow you to pick a default delivery day if you wish, to make future orders easier if you want delivery on the same day. Once you choose your day of week, the site will indicate the date of delivery at the top of the screen.

You’ll be able to place, change or cancel your order anytime until 8 PM one day before your delivery day. Definitely convenient since I predictably forgot to order a few key ingredients!

The delivery window is 9am-9pm, but on your delivery day, the ETA is narrowed down to 3 hours and indicated on your online account.

At the checkout page when placing your order, you can opt for a text message when your order has been delivered.

And in your account settings, you can select which emails and texts you’d like to receive, including reminders before your order deadline if you forget to place an order (you choose the number of hours of advance notice).

They also have a “standing order” system to make it easier to order things you need on a regular basis. These items will be delivered on a continuing schedule. You can then edit which items are on the standing order, and how frequently these items are delivered (weekly, biweekly, monthly, or mix and match), and pause or cancel items on the standing order any time. Use of the standing order system gets you 5% off.

Accepting Organic Grocery Delivery from Spud.ca

I scheduled my delivery for Wednesday. The initial delivery window of 9am-9pm is quite large, which is inconvenient if you live in an apartment or aren’t home to take your groceries in. Luckily I live where I feel comfortable having my groceries left on my doorstep even if I’m out for the day, but this obviously doesn’t work for everyone.

However it is convenient that Spud does not require you to be home for delivery which gives more flexibility. The website even asks you for specific instructions where to leave your order when you reach the checkout page.

The nice part about Spud delivery is even if you aren’t home, you don’t have to worry about food spoiling. Your groceries will be packed with dry ice and cold packs in insulated bags, and produce and perishables arrive at their warehouse daily, so your order is always fresh.

Previously I’ve gotten my Spud delivery in reusable Rubbermaid totes. The reusable bins have a $5 deposit for new customers, in order to encourage people to return them. Spud will either pick up the bin and packaging on your next delivery day, or you can schedule a bin pick up.

This time my order came in several cardboard boxes packed with dry ice. I’m not sure if the change is a new practice or just because of COVID. Either way, I came home to frozen food several hours later on a hot sunny day, so their packing methods definitely work.

As a dog lover, I really hope they continue delivering in cardboard boxes because of how much fun it is to watch your dog help you open the package, and see how much joy they get. Just look at this guy loving the latest Spud delivery.

It’s also more convenient to just recycle those cardboard boxes than it is to schedule another pick-up day for the driver to pick up your delivery bins if you don’t plan on ordering for a while.

Getting a Spud delivery makes me so happy. This is the way local organic groceries are supposed to look:

Spud does deliver to both offices and apartments. In fact, the checkout page asks for further instructions on how to get into your building (i.e., buzzer number?) if you live in an apartment. Their FAQ page offers suggestions for where apartment orders can be left if you are not home – this includes nearby locations such as your office.

Take a look at these pictures of the fresh produce I received:

The Spud.ca Website Experience

Spud’s website ordering experience is unmatched. The shopping experience is fun because the website is so well laid out with lots of thought put into it.

Spud has a variety of products. Each category on the website has hundreds of items to choose from, with a couple categories even reaching the thousands. Over 50% of their products are locally sourced. The grocery products they offer are certified organic and natural, originating from 15 local farms and 205 local suppliers that are less than 800 km from their Vancouver warehouse.

Some of these vendors are profiled on the Spud website. You can even see the distance each product travelled to get to the Spud warehouse in Vancouver.

Each product has a photo. The weight and size is indicated. There is also a description about the product, the vendor it came from, and other general information, including nutrition, storage, and even what to use the product for.

The calendar makes it easy to see which days offer free delivery or pickup (which is honestly most days for Chilliwack) and select or full range of products. Items out of stock are indicated as such. You can also see what items will be in stock on your chosen default delivery day by toggling a switch at the top of the shopping screen.

What Happens if You Aren’t Satisfied?

If something isn’t up to your standards, requesting a refund from Spud is super easy. They have a 100% satisfaction guarantee. I noticed the next day that the sandwich bread I ordered looked stale and ummm…had the consistency of a football… Luckily, all I had to do was login to my account, select that item and simply hit the “request refund” button.

I really appreciated how easy it was to get my money back, no questions asked – unlike dealing with Instacart’s customer service where you have to be prepared to negotiate and deal with customer service reps who would rather not give your money back.

Spud will simply credit your account so you can use it towards your next order.

Should You Try Spud.ca?

I have full confidence in Spud that my groceries will arrive in great shape with fresh produce freshly-picked, good quality, cold, and on time. I don’t have to worry about an Instacart Shopper picking less-than-ideal produce because they are in a hurry and I hate to say it, but underpaid. Spud takes real pride in their products and their whole culture is forward-moving and sustainable. You can definitely feel the quality and care that gets put into their products and packaging.

Of course, this comes at an added cost – possibly the only downside of Spud. If your only focus is getting your groceries as cheap as possible at the expense of quality, then Spud probably isn’t for you. I still get my canned foods and kitchen staples from Superstore because Spud can be too expensive for staples that you can get at the regular grocery store.

However, my grocery strategy has evolved over the years and I definitely would choose Spud for my local fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood. Spud gets a lot of things right. The best parts have to be the quality of food, layout of the website, and ease of refunds. This makes it hard not to want to order from them again!

Spud.ca is perfect for you if you’re looking for high quality, fresh, local, and organic groceries and want to save time on shopping by ordering online on a well-designed website (with the option of a repeating order on a default day to save even more time), and having it delivered right to your door! They are certainly worth a try!
