Walmart offers grocery delivery to select stores in Canada, including Mission, BC, where orders are fulfilled by Walmart themselves. However, in Chilliwack, Walmart offers grocery delivery through their delivery partner, Instacart.

If you’d rather pick up your Walmart grocery order, you can do that too, but you’ll need to shop on Walmart’s website for pick up orders.

Example Time: I placed 22 items in my cart across several departments (meat, canned goods, produce etc.) and my subtotal came to $103.83. This would be my subtotal if I were to shop in store.

Now let’s take a look at the breakdown of Instacart’s fees for my grocery delivery:

• Subtotal: $103.83
  • This is what I would pay for my items if I shopped in the store.
• Delivery: $3.99
  • This is Instacart’s delivery fee, which can be waived with Instacart “Express” – more on that later.
• Service Fee: $5.19
  • The service fee goes to Instacart and covers the cost of operating their website and customer service.
• Estimated taxes and fees: $1.12
  • Estimated sales tax: $0.66
  • Delivery fee tax: $0.20
  • Service fee tax: $0.26
• Driver Tip: $5.19
  • This was the suggested amount of 5% that was automatically added to my total, however this can be changed to add more of a tip, or eliminated. You can also tip your driver cash in-person on arrival. 100% of the tip goes to the driver.
• Total: $119.32

My total grocery bill if I were to shop in-store with taxes and fees would be $104.49. That means my grocery delivery costs $14.83, for someone to do my shopping for me and deliver it to my house. That worked out to a 12% fee.

If you plan accordingly, and grocery shop less, paying for someone to do your shopping for you and deliver it to yourself makes total sense. It’s one less thing you have to worry about, and it frees you up to spend your valuable time on other tasks.

However, if you’re placing smaller, more frequent orders, you’re going to be spending an unnecessary amount on delivery fees. So be smart and plan ahead.

Is Instacart “Express” Worth It?

However, if you’re a frequent online grocery shopper, you may want to consider Instacart Express where you’ll receive free unlimited delivery over $35, and avoid higher fees during peak hours.

You can join Instacart Express for $99 a year, or get billed monthly for $9.99 a month.

Keep in mind that even with Instacart Express, you’ll still be paying the service fee, taxes, and a tip for each order. If you are placing at least 3 grocery orders a month, then Instacart Express pays for itself.

How to Online Shop for Grocery Delivery

If an item is running low you’ll be notified upon your selection. If you’d like, you can approve a substitution to replace it with. Some items will automatically suggest a replacement item, or you can browse and choose your own.
